The Center for Spine Care sees a lot of female patients with back pain. Back pain in females is very common, often due to the way a woman’s anatomy is designed. Females of all ages can get lower back pain in the pelvic area or tailbone due to a part of the spine called the a sacroiliac joint. The sacroiliac joint or SI joint, is the joint in the bony pelvis between the sacrum and the ilium of the pelvis, which are joined together by strong ligaments. This area can be affected by changes due to pregnancy, repetitive sports-related activities such as running, or a car accident.
Symptoms are usually pain in the tailbone region or pain from sitting. Fortunately it can be treated with conservative therapy or if necessary, minimally invasive spine surgery. Michael J. Musacchio, Jr., M.D. offers a great video explanation..
